I opened my Etsy shop back in June of 2012 just for fun, not really anticipating how much interest I would have from customers or how much I would love being a part of the Etsy community. So after a boom in sales just this past January, I’ve been taking measures to be more serious about my shop and create a true brand around it.
If you’ve read this blog at all, you’ll gather that I am always trying my best to tread lightly on the earth and live healthfully for myself, others, and the environment. So using the typical not-so-eco-friendly bubble mailers provided by the post office was really bothering me.
When I finally decided (with the help of my customers!) that Original Organics is here to stay, I began researching and brainstorming ways to package and ship my items in a manner that is lighter on the earth, uses less materials, and is simply conscious and practical.
I happily settled on the wonderful EcoEnclose. They are a great company that specializes in shipping materials that are biodegradable, recycled, recyclable, and just plain earth-friendly.
I chose the EcoEnclose 100% Recycled & Biodegradable padded mailers for a few reasons, one of them being that they are best-suited for my products, but here are a few more reasons:
- Made of 100% recycled material
- Biodegrade within 5-60 months.
- Returns to the earth as humus and biomass
- Will break down in composting or in LANDFILLS!
- Features a handy tear strip for easy opening
- Padded with “yesterday’s news” (aka newspapers)
- Made in the USA
I also wanted to highlight a few other items from EcoEnclose because I think they are so wonderful, and also important – they are very affordable! I paid 1/3 of the price for these mailers as I do for the ones from the post office, and that is including shipping!
A common misconception with products that are more environmentally-friendly is that they have to be more expensive as well. In many cases, this is simply not true, or the cost is totally worth it when we consider other hidden costs of using something less environmentally sustainable . . . anyhow, that’s another post for another day ;)
Alternatives to Wasteful Packaging
Here are a few earth-friendly alternatives to common shipping/packaging items that are often wasteful and completely disposable:
Comprised of 100% recycled cardboard made entirely from post-consumer and post-industrial waste, this bubble wrap is completely upcycled and may be the most eco-friendly “bubble” wrap I’ve ever met!
Constructed from 100% post-consumer content – comes in white or natural kraft (cardboard color)
This is so unique and exciting for me because tape is one thing that I find to be very wasteful as it is rarely, if ever, reusable. Plastic plastic and more plastic inundates the tape world. EcoEnclose’s tape is a renewable plant-based adhesive made from Kraft paper. In addition to it being eco-friendly because of its ingredients, you will also save money and the environment through simply using less of it – one strip of this tape will do the job of 3 strips of plastic tape!
Overall, I’m very pleased with the envelopes and the customer service provided by the folks at EcoEnclose. High quality all the way around!
