HOW I BECAME A HEALTHNUT

FROM HEALTH STRUGGLES . . .

I’ve been pretty interested in holistic health for a while now. It all really started (even though there were signs of it creeping up inside of me for while) when I got what I refer to as “adult acne” at the unsuspecting age of 20.

I had been fortunate to avoid the adolescent high school years of acne, but just when I thought I was home-free, acne found me. I was a sophomore in college. I was eating God knows what, drinking alcohol, and I remember quite a few Red Bulls in the mix as well.

And then, acne. It was pretty bad and very difficult to hide.

I saw a dermatologist for the first time. I remember waiting for about 30 minutes. Then, when I got in the room and the doctor came in, I was feeling relieved and excited to finally, finally hear about how to fix what was ailing me. Why did I have acne? How do I make it better? What is the true root problem here?

But as quickly as the doctor entered the room, he was out again just as quickly. He looked at me, wrote a prescription, and then left. Honestly, it was that abrupt. Sure, if I had been a bit more forward or knowledgeable about what to ask at the time, I probably could have kept him there long enough to ask the question I was dying to know – “So, what’s the cause of all of this?”

Through years of antibiotics that my acne slowly became immune to, to poor health, low energy, and other symptoms of taking these antibiotics, I still wondered, “why do I have acne?” I may not have been highly informed, but I knew enough in my early 20-something-mind to know that there was a deeper issue here, that acne was a symptom to a larger problem.

Yet no doctor told me this. They gave me something (antibiotics) to deal with the symptom, but still my acne would flair up, and still I was pumping something into my system that was ultimately weakening me further and causing other symptoms, worse than acne.

I was 20, then 21, then 22 and feeling much less healthy than I should have felt. I began changing my diet and being more attentive to what I put into my body. I became more aware of concepts like whole, organic foods and how what we put into our bodies truly affects us from the inside out.

. . . TO TRUE HEALING

At 22, I wandered into a natural food store. I found myself talking to an employee there about my acne that just wouldn’t go away. I had been through rounds of antibiotics over the years, and it always came back. I told her I didn’t want to be on antibiotics, so I had just stopped them a week or two prior.

She talked to me about probiotics, about how my body needed to make up for killing off all the bad (and the good!!) bacteria that went with antibiotics. About how acne is, in fact, a symptom of a deeper problem from within.

So, just like that, I got some high quality probiotics and picked up some other items like tea tree essential oil to help solve this problem that had been plaguing me for nearly 3 years.

And truly, within weeks, my acne was clearing up. I was off antibiotics. I was taking probiotics, eating better, and using the essential oils. It took a couple months for the acne to completely clear, but what matters is that it did. It went away. Without medication. With pure, holistic methods that were costing me a fraction of what it cost to go see a doctor, pay for antibiotics, etc. AND I was healthier. I felt better, more energetic, more like a 22-year-old should.

After that experience, I was so interested in this world of holistic health that I dove in full-force. I was already into the idea of sustainable food and agriculture from an environmental standpoint, but now I began exploring how such things impact human health. I was hooked on healthy living. I became a healthnut.

So that’s my story. But we all have our own stories, our own paths to get where we are.
